Next, you’ll visit Lima’s historic center, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and founded by the Spanish conquistador, Francisco Pizarro. Here you’ll admire the colonial Plaza Mayor (the central square), which is surrounded by 5 important buildings: the Government Palace, the Cathedral (where Pizarro is buried), the Archbishop´s Palace, the Municipal Palace, and the Palace of Lima. You’ll then travel a few blocks to the San Francisco Monastery, famous for its catacombs where over 250,000 human bones are still on display. Your tour of Lima will end with a visit to some of the modern, upscale areas of the city, now punctuated with numerous world-class restaurants, lively neighborhoods such as San Isidro, Miraflores, and the Larcomar Complex, perched on a cliffside overlooking the Pacific Ocean with views of islands off the coast. You’ll return to your hotel in the early evening. (OVERNIGHT IN LIMA)

In the afternoon at 1:20pm your expert guide will take you to many of the amazing archeological sites in and around the city, including the Cusco Cathedral in the Plaza de Armas and the Temple of the Sun or Qoricancha, as well as the ruins of Sacsayhuaman, Q’enko, Puka Pukara, and Tambomachay. In the late afternoon, you’ll return to your Cusco hotel ends 6:40 pm. Next, you will visit the impressive fortress of Ollantaytambo. These magnificent ancient ruins provide a great vantage point over the Sacred Valley. After breakfast at your Sacred Valley hotel, you will take at 7:05am the Vistadome train to Machu Picchu, the hidden Inca citadel. This hour-and-a-half to two-hour train journey is one of the finest in the world. Much of the path winds along the rushing Vilcanota river and snakes through gorges cut into the bases of massive mountainsides, offering passengers dramatic views of the Andean landscape as the train descends from high altitude plains down through the cloud forest. Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, the town at the base of Machu Picchu, you will be met at the train station and accompanied to the bus station for a 25-minute ride up to the secluded citadel, which is surrounded by a cloud forest inhabited by orchids and hummingbirds. Next, you will meet your expert English-speaking guide for a tour of the most important sites in Machu Picchu, including the Intihuatana (Sun dial stone), the Sun Temple, and the Room of 3 Windows.
